Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family navigate their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
