At Least 98 Palestinian Detainees Have Died in Detention Beginning in October 2023, Israeli Data Reveals
Based on information provided by Israel, no fewer than 98 detainees from Palestine have died while detained starting from October 2023. A rights monitoring body operating from Israel has reported that the real figure is likely considerably greater, as a result of many of missing individuals originating in Gaza.

“Even though we are offering documentation for a greater figure of fatalities than once estimated, this is an incomplete account,” he said. “We are confident that there are even now individuals who lost their lives in custody that we are unaware of.”
Non-Combatant Fatalities
Confidential official information indicates that the vast majority of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who lost their lives in jail were non-combatants, based on a simultaneous examination.
During May of 2024, a defense forces registry monitoring all militants in Gaza, a list of over 47,000 identified persons, documented merely 21 deaths in detention. By that point, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had lost their lives in detention.
Custodial Environment

High-Profile Cases
Certain fatalities in detention have been widely reported, for instance a 50-year-old hospital director who lost his life in prison after four months in detention.
An inmate detained alongside the individual testified that he was brought to the courtyard by guards shortly before his demise, visibly injured and exposed from the waist down. His remains has not been returned to Gaza.
Further inmates who perished in Israeli custody remain anonymous. Detention administrators and military gave researchers with the figure of deaths in confinement, and basic additional information including the location where they perished, but excluding the prisoners’ names.
Documentation Problems
In 21 cases, mainly people from Gaza, researchers were unable to match the limited information supplied by officials to a fatality documented by advocacy bodies, by means of testimony from freed prisoners or accounts in the press.
The inmates’ next of kin could be unaware about their relatives’ casualties also, as Israel has made it difficult to locate detainees it is detaining. Over half a year at the outset of the war, the Israeli military declined to provide basic information about the status of many of individuals confined in Gaza, in effect carrying out a practice of unacknowledged detention, according to the advocacy organization.
