A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in national projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
