Battlefield 6's Casual Playlist Ignites Heated Debates Over Bots, XP Rewards, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, the game developers introduced a fresh game mode titled Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode resembles the standard Breakthrough setup but features a few notable changes:
- Each team has just eight human participants, with the remaining filled by 32 bots.
- Actions done by human gamers award complete experience points, while bot actions provide reduced XP.
- Just a pair of locations can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
- Features like Player tags, accolades, and career stat updates have been turned off.
So essentially, the playlist lives up to its title: it's a laid-back take of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think there's nothing wrong, as it provides additional choices for players looking for different ways to enjoy the title. However, if video games has shown one thing, it's that you can't please everyone. In other words, a lot of BF6 players are upset.
Player Reactions: Anger to Support
"Gamers prefer human opponents. Avoid making the errors of your competitors," reads a response to the mode reveal. "Absolutely shocking idea," comments another. Meanwhile, on the Battlefield subreddit, one user remarks, "I have no idea where we are going with this title," and another lists all the issues they consider to be broken in Battlefield 6: "Resolve glitches, fix drone glitch, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We don't need this bot mode."
On the other hand, amid the criticism, some gamers sharing how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's enjoyable to practice, real players keep it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," reads one Reddit comment. "The community fails to see that there are gamers who have lives and don't play this title 24/7. Let them find a middle ground," states a different comment. One reply on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a parent gamer with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," and someone else applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Valid Concerns and Player Feedback
Despite the support, players have valid points to criticize the new mode. Some users have highlighted that it will make queue times more extended for different playlists due to the large amount of playlists currently available. On a similar note, some areas often face mostly bots in the current modes. It also seems somewhat counterintuitive that the mode won't start without a minimum number of real players, even though it primarily centers on combat against bots.
Lastly, a major grievances is that a previous feature was meant to provide full XP, including AI matches, but that got canned when they tried to eliminate bot farms from the system. Thus Casual Breakthrough seems like the player base compromising in the middle, according to a Reddit comment. Another describes this addition as the devs "making a mistake so hard, I had so much fun in the initial release, what prompted them to adjust it?"
Looking Ahead: Will Changes Occur?
If the development team has demonstrated something so far with Battlefield 6, it is that they're listening and responding to feedback. Assignments that were overly hard got fixed very quickly, as did the required Redsec challenges. Chances are that, if their data shows this recent mode is underperforming to their standards, they won't be shy to change it again.
