Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Claims Unilever Prevented Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
The co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated that parent company Unilever blocked the introduction of a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, who co-founded the company with his partner, announced how he plans to personally create this new product as part of an individual collection highlighting causes the company has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Between Creators and Parent Company
The recent development escalates the continuing disagreement among the world-famous ice cream maker with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant that has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders maintain that Unilever and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol of Support
Mr. Cohen announced via social media that he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder stated from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians due to its colors, that closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement and Recent Developments
Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
The new dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company which originally established several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes plus Future Intentions
The founder revealed how he will develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever.
The announcement comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades with the organization, mentioning concerns that its independence was compromised following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy so that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the values that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
