The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
