Eurovision Was Once a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.

An freshly coined term surfaced a couple of months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is unique to Gaza, as stated by health professionals like child health specialists. Typically, it is rare for medical staff to care for a young patient who has been bereaved of their entire family. However, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of young amputees exceeds that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal in scores of doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Reported Truce

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that violations are continuing. The Israeli government disputes these claims, consistent with how it refutes all charges it is accused of. But while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, we are told, is what international harmony resembles.

The contest, notably banned Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Staggering Tragedy

The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. An institution that once promoted togetherness has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
