Citizens have come together across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The incident led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The violent enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader stated on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a risk to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled formal memorials until 16 October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but events still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' representatives convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the plan.

A high-ranking representative involved in the negotiations said that an evening round of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.

The source said the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, amid disagreements over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.

He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to produce any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to reduce the disparities between the two sides.

Essential Points in Talks

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • After-conflict administration of the territory

Civilian Sentiment

In the city's memorial area previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother survived the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place seems like home anymore and until each abducted person return no one will feel safe."

"After we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to recover," she continued.

Near the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their support for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Demonstrator one woman stated: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of the population want the hostilities to finish in exchange for the freedom of the captives.

Palestinian Situation

At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.

From there, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people said the severe Israeli attacks carried on.

In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the early hours of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr districts and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.

"When the evening arrives, the dread arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.

"We are afraid of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, embracing, notably my smallest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we look at the news to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be completed and that the fighting will resume to us."

Medical Emergency

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had taken in the remains of several people by the midday, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the southern city of the city indicated another two dead people had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the southern area, medical staff reported.
