Shock as Popular South African DJ Gunned Down in the City of Johannesburg.
A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation struggling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the downtown area on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the forty-year-old presenter was confronted by a trio of assailants, one of whom began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.
The purpose of the incident remains unclear and no one has been arrested are in custody, as per the official statement.
How It Happened
Police said that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a location in the vicinity of the city center landmark.
He had devoted time at the property overseeing the installation of safety equipment, which had been illegally inhabited by squatters, as per local media.
"The report indicates the man was approached by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," a police statement confirmed.
CCTV footage reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocks and clad in what appeared to be a protective services outfit opening fire on Stock before fleeing.
The DJ attempted to flee after he was hit but collapsed across the street.
Police added that Stock had an gun that was not fired and it was not a robbery during the attack.
Key evidence, like cartridges, were recovered from the location.
Appeal for Witnesses
Police have appealed eyewitnesses who may have seen the suspects to assist with the investigation.
"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the attack, and investigators have been following their trail to determine their whereabouts," stated a police chief.
Family and Public Reaction
His sister, a close relative, expressed the family was struggling to understand the tragedy.
"Words fail me. I don't have words," she stated.
"Everyone understood he was a voice for many people. He was a fearless commentator about issues not many people were ready to speak about. This is a devastating blow."
She urged the citizens to not sharing disturbing footage from the scene, saying this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's three sons.

Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that premiered on a popular local TV network.
Beyond his media career, Stock was active in various business ventures, including security provision, offering elite guarding services and protecting prestigious gatherings across South Africa.
He was also said to be engaged in real estate operations and assisted with building evictions.

In a communication, the broadcaster he worked for declared Stock was known for his charisma, kindness and quick humor, adding that his influence "will endure".
