The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... Currently.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the acclaimed series reaching its finale—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get swayed by the rampant praise and fan theories regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's amazing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Has Vince Gilligan Know the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff are not listening by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.
“We have some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why mess with the classics?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
