Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose legacy on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
