The megacity Awakens to Hazardous Haze Post Diwali
As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves inhaling extremely polluted air that fell into the "severe" level.
Extremely High Air Quality Readings
Various sections of the city recorded an AQI over 500, which translates to ten times the recommended limit established by the World Health Organization.
In some locations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1,800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times higher than acceptable limits.
Fireworks Ban and New Changes
Since 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their major role to the dangerous smog that engulfs the metropolis as winter approaches.
Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed regional administration petitioned the judicial authority to propose a modification of the prohibition.
The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been criticized by environmentalists as being only about 30% less polluting – as a balance between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Legal Decision and Enforcement
To the disappointment of public health and environmental activists, judges complied with the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be set off during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.
During the celebrations, there was considerable violation of the regulated periods across the city, with little monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.
Many recording stations throughout Delhi registered air quality peaking around the night hours to the most severe levels observed during the festival in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Implications
The proliferation of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming worsening pollution levels in Lahore on contaminants originating in across the border following the events.
Chronic Pollution Problem
The dangerously high readings of air contamination in the city have continued as a significant issue for over a decade and a half, with the problem showing no improvement.
During celebratory seasons, the levels of dangerous particles in the atmosphere has been found to spike to 70% higher the peak records ever measured in the Chinese city, which was formerly regarded as the world's most polluted urban center.
Diverse Contamination Contributors
The problem in the capital is resulting from a mix of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, rubbish burning and haze from agricultural fires in adjacent regions of Punjab and Haryana.
In these regions, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, creating toxic pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as winter air sets in.
Medical and Financial Impact
The economic and health consequences on the approximately 33 million people living in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to various research.
This pollution results in elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand premature mortalities annually in Delhi.
